April Ketamine Week

Posted by on Apr 29, 2017 in Recent News | 0 comments

This past week, Sagam Community Hospital (SCH) completed another successful Ketamine Week. SCH trained three new providers from Sagam, a clinical officer, medical officer intern, and senior nurse. Twelve procedures, related to gynaecology and obstetrics, were done with no adverse event. Each provider was able to administer ketamine with supervision and then, on their own multiple times. At Sagam, we strive to teach all of our medically trained to staff to administer ketamine. We want to give a warm thank you to all of those involved in ketamine week: administrators, providers, trainers, surgeons, and our partners at Massachusetts General Hospital. We look forward to next month’s Ketamine...

On April 19th, Sagam Community Hospital’s (SCH) outreach team headed to Akala for the second time within a month. A small but warm crowd met us during their bustling market day.  SCH offered its usual services including cervical cancer screening, family planning services, HIV testing, and M-Tiba and NHIF registration. For the first time, Jaqueline Chemem, a Clinical Officer of Sagam covered the patient counselling services stand where she saw 20 patients. SCH is thrilled to have her on the outreach team and we look forward to her future participation.   SCH saw a total of 114 people, 45 condoms were distributed, and 22 women were screened for cervical cancer. SCH would like to extend a warm thanks to Jhpiego for donating a mobile clinic, M-Tiba, and Sagam’s health workers for making this outreach a...

Sagam Community Hospital (SCH) traveled to Wagai Primary School for community outreach, approximately 45 minutes from Sagam. The outreach was a major success in part because of our partnership with an optometrist and an otolaryngology, an ear, nose and throat specialist. SCH had a total of 321 community members register for services offered. There were a total of 147 community members that participated in blood pressure testing and 25 community members that participated in HIV testing and counseling. Cervical cancer screening was also available and 15 patients were screened. Infants and children under five were administered vitamin A. In addition, 20 patients were seen by a Clinical Officer for a wide range of health inquiries. We would like to thank all of the staff members at SCH for making weekly community outreaches possible. We would also like to thank our partners at KMET, CHAK, M-tiba, and Jhpiego for their continued support. Lastly SCH thanks Wagai Primary School for hosting...

Department Spotlight: Wenslaus Adenya, Clinical Officer

Posted by on Apr 10, 2017 in Recent News | 0 comments

Wenslaus Adenya, a Clinical Officer here at Sagam Commuinty Hospital (SCH), recently attended a three-day training hosted by Christian Health Association of Kenya (CHAK) in Nairobi, Kenya. CHAK is a proud partner of SCH and is committed to helping provide quality care. We sat down with Wenslaus to discuss his experience and takeaways from the training. The training involved various modules that were taught during the course of the training. These modules included the Buddy Doctor Initiative, Kenyan Curriculum, Professional Coaching, and Mentorship of General Practitioners in Changing the Strategic Approach for Glycemic Control in Type 2 Diabetes. Another learning objective was to train clinicians to mentor health care workers in their facilities and other CHAK affiliates through Continued Medical Education (CME). In addition, clinicians were trained to consolidate reporting of diabetes data in their regions. Resources and tools were also provided to clinicians to collaborate in forming a patient diabetes support group within their facilities. SCH congratulates Wenslaus on completing his training. We are excited to learn from his training in our upcoming CME. We would also like to thank CHAK for their continued support and learning experience. Asante...

Asembo Bay Community Outreach

Posted by on Apr 7, 2017 in Recent News | 0 comments

This week, outreach took Sagam Community Hospital (SCH) to Asembo Bay, a lovely town right on Lake Victoria. Asembo Bay is known for its delicious and abundant fish.  Because of the fishermen lifestyle, SCH left extra early from Sagam to catch the fishermen and women before their peak hours at work. We set up camp with a view to the lake and provided our usual services including: cervical cancer screening, HIV testing, blood pressure screening, family planning services, M-TIBA and NHIF registrations, consultations, and vitamin supplements to children. From the services provided we saw 10 patients in cervical cancer screening, 24 people were tested for HIV and 66 people had their blood pressure tested. For the first time, our stellar Clinical Officer, Ann, participated in a community outreach and saw 34 patients in the consultation station. She did a fantastic job and was warmly welcomed by the local residents. We look forward her to taking her more outreaches! We would like to thank our partners, KMET, CHAK, and M-TIBA for making these weekly community events possible. We will keep you posted for next week’s...
