Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) has been in close partnership with Sagam Community Hospital since August of 2012. The shared vision is to develop Sagam into a center of excellence for medical care and education, and innovations research. As part of the collaboration, MGH is facilitating the construction of a modern emergency center and operating theater. The MGH/Sagam team provides a unique combination of world class clinical care and excellence in innovations research.
The MGH/Sagam team is additionally closely partnered with Maseno University Medical School. The 3 partners have developed a post-graduate residency program in Emergency and Family Medicine, set to commence in 2014. The program is four years in length and will train doctors to become leaders in patient care and systems design, focused on a broad spectrum of medicine with special attention on the critically ill and injured in low-resource settings. MGH always has at least 2 consultant level doctors on-site at Sagam and are working in close collaboration with the dedicated faculty at Maseno University to ensure that the trainee doctors will mark a new wave of physicians in Kenya that can address the communities’ needs holistically and effectively while also being poised to become regional and national leaders in emergency care. Our faculty and trainees will always have an eye to innovate in order to solve previously intractable challenges and to transform systems of care delivery.
