On May 22nd, Sagam Community Hospital’s African Institute of Health Transformation (AIHT) team were guest speakers at Siaya County’s Health Management monthly meeting at the Siaya County Club. AIHT was founded on the strong relationship and collaborations between Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), Sagam Community Hospital (SCH), and the Kenya Medical Education Trust (KMET). During this time, Debora Rogo, the General Manager of Sagam presented the research currently being done at AIHT to the clinical heads across Siaya County.
The goals of AIHT are to strengthen the health system in Siaya County through an innovative, sustainable, and pragmatic approach. Through innovations led by MGH, AIHT hopes to foster an educational and hands-on environment for local clinicians to tackle the following prominent health disparities our low resource setting:
- Preventing post partum haemorrhaging deaths through the Every Second Matters (ESM) Uterine Balloon Tamponed (UBT)
- Closing the anesthesia gap through our ESM Ketamine kit and training
- Addressing infant respiratory illnesses through our newest innovation, ESM Newborn Resuscitation Bundle (NRB), bubble continuous positive airway pressure (bCPAP)
Once this research was presented to the clinical heads of the county, the floor opened to a rich discussion of questions and answers. We received positive feedback from our peers and look forward to welcoming interested participants to further collaborate with AIHT’s efforts in Siaya County.
