SCH is always in the hunt for new ways to improve service delivery and teaching, in order to improve efficiency, lower cost and guarantee quality.
SCH was recently hosted by Mr. Mick Navin, CEO of Operative Experience, in Principio, Maryland, USA.
This company is in the cutting edge of simulator development and has produced some of the worlds best in trauma management. They have recently embarked on maternal and newborn technologies and have now developed simulators for obstetric care, including normal delivery as well as caesarian sections.
Prof. Khama Rogo was warmly welcomed to the facility and observed, first hand, the simulators for training of clinicians in caesarian section and hysterectomy. The technology allows simulation of different complication that accompany caesarian sections such as severe hemorrhage, placenta prévia, twins and uterine rupture.
They discussed options for making this technology available at SCH before the end of the year. Not only would this be a first in Africa, but would immensely enhance the training capacity at the institution.
‘Wow!’ was the final comment from Prof. Rogo. Let’s keep our fingers crossed.
