On Thursday 2nd,February 2017, the ECD team delegation from both Kenya and USA visited Sagam Community Hospital (SCH) and they were impressed by the deep commitment to community, inclusive and high quality of services, and touched the drive to make the world a better place for all.
The delegation included staff from the Lwak Catholic Sisters Hospital , the Kenya AIDS NGO Organization (KANCO) Plan International, CRS, ChildFund and the Hilton Foundation. The delegation held discussions with UNICEF, PATH and County government officials from both Siaya and Kisumu and agreed to scale up work to integrate early childhood (assessment of developmental milestones, referral of developmental delays, parent coaching on play and stimulation, nutrition etc) as part of health services in Siaya County.
The activities will include work with CHVs, linkages to daycare/pre-school and efforts to reach communities directly. The aim is to demonstrate an integrated ECD model from pregnancy through age 5 years looks like and how it can be scaled. They aim to monitor with population data from the county – moving from a project to project approach, and to support the county to take a stronger management and coordination role.
Given Sagam’s leadership role as a model site for delivery of quality services as well as the medical pre-service training we are doing – SCH is expected to play a role and will be invited to the Science of ECD course that Aga Khan will be delivering in the coming months in Siaya.Sagam welcomes the opportunity to join forces with the delegation to scale up ECD in Siaya and the region. In Sagam the team was hosted by among others the General Manager Debora Rogo, Nursing Director Elizabeth Ogada and Executive Officer Benson Sewe.
